Youp Dumas: “In Congress, the Uphill Battle for Gun Control” by Emma Schwartz

In this article Emma Swartz describes the battle about gun control in the United States. After the recent massacres there has been a great debate which splits the American population in half. The first half wants gun control laws to be stricter, they want to get rid of (some) guns and they want to make it harder for people to get guns. For example, they want to screen people with guns to see if they are capable of carrying the responsibility a gun-owner needs. The second half of the population, on the other hand, want to keep the same rules about gun control. They want to keep “their” guns.

Politicians have tried several times to ban guns but now they let their opinion on gun control go, because if you talk about gun control everybody bridles. You can never satisfy both anti-gun and pro-gun citizens. Politicians don’t speak up their mind about guns, whilst they don’t want to lose their precious votes.

What needs to happen now is that there should be more research about guns. Politicians simply miss facts to prove their opinion. When there is enough data available people can finally make up their mind about gun control and we will finally end this discussion.

As I am interested in this subject; this article gave me a fascinating new view on this topic. I personally like to gather as much information about a topic I am interested in, because it helps me form my own and well-considered opinion.

  1. Currently, there are many ethical issues in each country and I find this issue really important. Is it safe to allow people owning a gun? For sure there will be different points of view about this question. I agree that they should do some some research and I also think they should consider the pros and cons in deep. But, from my point of view, this is playing with fire. I do not think you can allow people allowing something that can harm other people and do not expect there will be more crimes and accidents. It may happen the same if the government bans it, but at least their awareness will be clean because they did what they could, but of course these is all related to interests.
